Asian Games 2018 – India’s Day 1 report-English


India won their first gold of the 2018 Asian Games through the excellence of wrestler Bajrang Punia who defeated Japan’s Takatani Daichi in the men’s 65kg Freestyle final. Bajrang defeated Khasanov Sirjiddin of Uzbekistan, Fayziev Abdulqosim (Tajikistan) and Batchullun Batmagnai of Mangolia..

Shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ravi Kumar won bronze in  the 10m Air Rifle Mixed Team event after falling behind China and Chinese Taipei.

Pawan Kumar won by fall against Cambodia’s Vuthy Heng to reach the Men’s 86kg last eight stage.

Sandeep Tomar lost in the quarter finals to Iran’s Raza Atrinagharchi by 15-9.

Olympic medallis Sushil Kumar was beaten by Bahrain’s Adam Batirov in the 74kg category. Sushil, also lost his qualification round match 3-5 hence missing out on a chance to go for bronze.

Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Abhishek Verna failed to qualify for the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team Finals.

In Badminton, India progressed to the quarterfinals of Men’s team event by beating Maldives 3-0.

In hand ball, India’s women’s team lost its Group A match against China 21-36.

The women’s volleyball team lost to South Korea by 25-17, 25-11, 25-13.

India’s hockey team began their campaign with utmost dominance as they beat home team Indonesia 8-0 in a group match.

The Indian women’s Kabaddi  team beat Japan 43-12 in its Group A match. While the men’s team ensured authority by beating Bangladesh 50-21, and later Sri Lanka 44-28 to stay on top of Group A.

Malkeet Singh and Gurinder Singh qualified for Men’s Pair final in rowing. Om Prakash and Swaran Singh entered the Men’s Double Sculls final.

Indian swimmers  Sajan Prakash qualified for the 200m butterfly final and Srihari Nataraj reched the 100m backstroke final in the morning. However, Natraj finished a disappointing seventh in the final. Prakash on the other hand came fifth.

The Indian basketball team disappointed as they lost 61-84 to ChineseTaipei. Having lost to Kazaakhstan 61-79, this was India’s second loss.

In men’s Changuqan final of Wushu, Anjul Namdeo and Suraj Singh Mayanglambam finished fifth and tenth respectively.

Sanatomi Chanu finished 14th in the women’s Taijiquan event with a score of 9.35, while Sanathoi Devi lost to Iran’s Mansoryan Elaheh 0-2 in the women’s Sanda, Round of 16.

 

Santosh Kumar progressed to the Round of 16 with 2-0 win over Mayanmar in the men’s Sanda -56 kg match.

Also, Pradeep Kumar progressed to the Men’s Sanda -70 kg quarterfinal with a 2-0 win over Tjikistan.

In Taekwando, the women’s team surrendered to Thailand in the Round of 16.

India are now 7th in the medal tally list as they’ve won one bronze and one gold in Day 1 of the Asian Games 2018
