Baojun 530-based upcoming MG SUV for India SPIED testing

Like we’ve said earlier, MG India will use Baojun 530 as the base for its upcoming SUV for our car market. This SUV, which will become the first-ever model from MG India, is likely to launch in the second-quarter of 2019. Recently, the Baojun 530 was spotted testing near MG Motor India’s manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat. It’s worth mentioning here that the Baojun 530 is a product of Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), which is basically the parent company of MG Motor.

It’s said that MG India will make several changes to the Baojun 530 before launching it with its own badge here. The SUV will come with an updated front fascia, which will carry a new front grille that will feature horizontal slats. Also, the upcoming SUV will come with updated headlamps and probably a revised bumper. Other details that can be made out from the spy images include roof rails, diamond-cut alloy wheels, LED turn indicators on the Outside Rear View Mirrors (ORVMs) and LED tail lights. As per various reports, MG Motor India will make some more changes to the Baojun 530 as per the tastes and preferences of the Indian buyers. The Baojun 530 measures 4,655 mm in length, 1,835 mm in width, and 1,760 mm in height.

In China, the Baojun 530 is on sale with 1.8-liter, naturally-aspirated and 1.5-liter, turbocharged petrol engines. In India, however, MG Motors India is likely to use the same Fiat-sourced 2.0-liter MultiJet II diesel engine that powers the Jeep Compass. The same engine will be also used by Tata Motors for powering the upcoming Harrier SUV. In India, the Baojun 530-based MG SUV will go on to rival the likes of Hyundai Creta, Jeep Compass, upcoming Tata Harrier, and Mahindra XUV500. Out of these, the Jeep Compass and the Tata Harrier will become direct rivals of the MG Motor India’s SUV. On the other hand, only the higher trims of the Hyundai Creta and the Mahindra XUV500 will be in crosshairs with the Baojun 530-based model. Prices of the upcoming MG SUV in India are likely to start at roughly Rs 17 lakh.
