AltBalaji is producing the kind of quality content that will easily put us at par with web series produced in the West. They have already impressed us with their The Test Case to name just one. Now, the streaming platform has released their latest venture, Home. The web series features veterans like Supriya Pilgaonkar, Annu Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri, and Parikshit Sahni, along with a brilliant new crop of actors like Amol Parashar, Chetna Pandey, Fehmaan Khan. I was excited to watch the episodes of the series, once I saw the promos. Having watched the first episode, I truly am looking forward to binge-watch the series. Here is my review.
What’s it about
Based on true events, Home focuses on the members of the Sethi family, living in a society. The members of the particular society face eviction because the buildings, as per law, are illegally constructed. The innocent members of the society have only fallen prey to the builder’s tactics. They all need to come together to find a way to save their home. While everyone in the society plays a part in the narrative, the plot is heavily weaved around the Sethi family.
There are quite a lot of things that make this show worth a watch. The simplicity of the characters make them it very relatable. The writing is brilliant! The natural approach of the actors is in sync with the palpable writing. Supriya is amazing and it wouldn’t be wrong to call her the life of the show. Her innocence, as an actor, just lights up the screen. Annu is in top form, and we totally think he should act more often than he does. Himani, despite a limited appearance in the first episode, makes an impact.
Director Habib Faisal’s Do Dooni Char is not everyone’s cup of tea. But the simplicity of the movie is endearing for sure. Habib creates something similar here. The characters are all so real. We have met someone like all of them at some point in our lives. At the same time, the story is engaging enough to make you concerned for the characters and make you come back to know their fate.
What really put me off was Amol Parashar’s character hurling abuses towards the end of the first episode. If not for that, the show is a perfect family watch. But, I would be very embarrassed with that part had I been watching Home with my parents. Moreover, the abuse just doesn’t go with the tone of the show.
What to do
Home is a series that will remind you of your mom’s cooking. Home is a series that will remind you of your father’s dad-jokes. Home is a series that will remind you of home. It is entertaining, with intelligent content. It is the change that we have been waiting to see on Indian TV but hey, it is a web-series, so it doesn’t really qualify, right?
