When you think of your pregnancy milestones, you likely recall the moment you found out, the day you told your family, your clever gender reveal, and then the big day when that little human you created came into the world. You probably shared these big events with those closest to you, especially your spouse. But for some mothers, including military wives like Britt Harris, that’s simply not an option if their husband is deployed — or tragically, if he loses his life defending our freedoms.

Britt is a 26-year-old new mom whose husband Chris was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan last August. She was only 6 weeks pregnant with their first child when Chris died, but throughout her pregnancy and since her daughter’s birth, she has kept her husband’s memory alive and has created an unbreakable bond with the soldiers who knew and loved him.

Chris only knew he was going to be a father for a few short days before his death, but that hasn’t stopped his wife from making sure her daughter (named Christian, after her dad), knows all about him and the brave men he fought with.

First, Britt sent poppers full of pink confetti to Chris’s troop so they could participate in a gender reveal. And although she couldn’t welcome them home herself, as they ironically returned on March 17, the day Christian was born, she has continued to foster the connection between Chris’s men and her daughter.

“I wanted to let everyone meet Christian together,” Britt tells Babble. “I wanted to use everyone from the gender reveal back in October and have these special and formal photos to show Christian one day. To show her the men and women that served alongside her father.”

The result was a series of breathtaking photos taken by Pinehurst Photography at Cape Fear Botanical Garden, just one day after Memorial Day. One shows the entire group holding baby Christian, who wears a special onesie that reads “My daddy’s my hero,” along with her father’s dog tags. Also included is a gorgeous shot of Britt holding baby Christian with all of Chris’s fellow soldiers saluting behind her, and one of tiny Christian next to a picture of her father and his boots.

Britt shares with Babble that many of the solders in these images where there when Chris passed, and in fact, a few were survivors from the same attack that took his life.

“Those are the people she should know and be able to see how much they all loved her right from the beginning,” she says. “They’ve been a part of her life before she was even born and I know they’re going to be around for the rest of her life. No matter where the army takes them all I will be able to show Christian how they all came together for her.”

The new mom from Fayetteville, North Carolina says she plans to get together with the men at least once a year to ensure they are a part of Christian’s life. When asked about what the future holds, the proud mom tells Babble, “Our future may be more stressful alone, but we will overcome any obstacle put in front of us. We will be a strong mother and daughter team.”

It looks like if the Harris girls need anything at all, they’ve got a bunch of good guys who would be there in a heartbeat. Congratulations to the Harris family — and thank you for your service and sacrifice.
