New Mahindra XUV500 OUTSELLS Jeep Compass: Here’s why

Jeep Compass has been on a constant rise on the sales chart since its inception. The monster it became, the Compass toppled the segment-leader XUV500 too. The XUV500 remained the segment leader for a long time but with a fresh vehicle in the same price-bracket took away some market share from it. However, the XUV500 has bounced back and has made a much taller building on the sales chart in comparison to the Compass. The Mahindra XUV500 posted a sales figure of 2,770 units while the Jeep Compass posted 1,518 units in the month of May 2018. Now the sales of the Compass has been on a steady downward slope since the new XUV500 arrived. What are the reasons for the rise of the XUV500 in the market? Let’s find out.

Looks fresher

Mahindra launched the facelifted XUV recently in the market. While being an only facelift version, the XUV500 gets significant changes like a bigger grille, headlamps and a new bumper. This gives the XUV500, which was an already popular SUV in the market, more limelight. The Mahindra SUV also looks significantly intimidating on the road and Indians do give preference to bigger-looking SUVs.

Loaded entry-level variant

The top-end XUV 500offers a longer list of features and equipment when it is compared to the top-end Compass. Even the base variant of the Mahindra XUV500 is more equipped than the base variant of the Compass. The XUV’s feature list includes electrically adjustable ORVMs, split tailgate, twin exhaust, roof rails, 6-way adjustable driver seat, dual HVAC, reading lamps, power windows, remote tailgate opening, glove box with laptop holder, flat foldable 2nd and 3rd-row seats and follow me headlamps. The features of Jeep Compass are not so expansive.

More value-for-money

Being an Indian brand, Mahindra has always been known for its value-for-money products. All of Mahindra’s products offer a lot for the price and the XUV500 is no different. The base model of the XUV500, which is quite loaded, is priced at Rs. 12,32 lakhs, ex-showroom, Mumbai. The base variant of the Jeep Compass is priced at Rs. 15.32 lakhs, ex-showroom, Mumbai.

It should be noted that the base variant of the XUV500 comes with a diesel engine while the Jeep Compass offers only the petrol variant with that price tag. That is a significant difference even in this segment. Indian customers love value-for-money products and the XUV500 is a clear winner here.

Diesel-automatic

Diesel is a popular choice of fuel in this segment and the automatic transmissions are gaining popularity in the market. While both the SUVs offer automatic options, the Jeep Compass only comes with a petrol automatic combination. The Mahindra XUV, on the other hand, offers automatic with both the petrol and diesel engine options. This gives an edge to the XUV500. Even though Jeep will launch the diesel automatic Trailhawk in India soon, it will not be as affordable as the XUV500.

Luxurious features

The top variant of the XUV500 is extremely plush. The W11 variant of the XUV500 is a newly introduced variant and gets a luxurious cabin. The list includes leather-covered dashboard and door trims, power adjustable seats, puddle lamps, chrome lines on the window, illuminated scuff plates and much more. The Compass does not get any of these luxury features.

Even the Mahindra Blue Sense enabled infotainment system offers driving statistics and can get connected to the phone to show various information about the car. The Mahindra XUV500 also gets extras like tyre-pressure monitoring system, automatic ORVM closing, sunroof, and Mahindra Blue Sense that gives data on various things like fuel economy, driving statistics and more.
