Renault Kwid-based RBC code-named MPV: What it’ll look like

Renault India has just started testing a brand new MPV based on the Kwid platform. Called the RBC, the MPV will use the CMF-A+ platform, which is essentially an extended version of the Kwid’s platform. The MPV is expected to be a 7 seater, but with a sub-4 meter footprint, much like the Datsun Go+. It’s likely to be a low cost vehicle, aimed at undercutting the Maruti Ertiga quite significantly. In fact, Renault could be looking at a sub-5 lakh rupee price tag for the new people mover. The Renault RBC MPV will make its debut in India next year, and here’s a speculative render that shows what it’ll look like.

As the render indicates, the RBC does seem to have plenty of Kwid inspired design cues. The front end does have Kwid-like headlamps and a grille design. The RBC MPV seems taller though, and with a much longer profile to give it the 7 seater stance. As for mechanicals, the Renault RBC MPV is likely to use a more powerful version of the Kwid’s 1.0 liter-3 cylinder petrol engine, which currently puts out 67 Bhp-91 Nm. Expect this motor to make about 80 Bhp on the MPV considering the larger load it’ll have to deal with. 5 speed manual and AMT options are likely while a front wheel drive layout will be standard.

Renault is yet to find success in the people mover segment in India. The Lodgy MPV, which shares its mechanicals with the Duster SUV, has been a slow seller for Renault, and even price cuts don’t seem to be doing much to improve sales. This seems to have prompted Renault to bet on low cost MPV segments, which will see multiple new options in the coming months. The Maruti WagonR, one of India’s best selling hatchbacks, will soon get an extended body version with seating for seven. The Datsun Go+ is all set to get a facelift shortly. Once the Kwid-based RBC comes in, it’s likely to expand the market even further.
