‘Ronaldo to Juventus’: A disaster made in heaven
Juventus announced the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo on Monday and as any club’s fans would do fans of the Old Lady are over the moon with the incoming of 5 times Ballond’or winner Cristiano Ronaldo. Social media was taken over by Juventus fan’s who can’t wait for 19th August, when they will see their formidable attacking force of Paolo Dybala, Ganzalo Higuain and their new signing Cristiano Ronaldo
Ronaldo who Real Madrid signed from Manchester United for a record breaking fee of 94 million euros spent 9 years at Los Blancos becoming their highest goal scorer and winning 2 Laligas and 4 Champions Leagues. After giving Real Madrid his prime years, it is tough to believe that the reigning Champions League holders will be able to sell the 33 old for a profit of 6 million euros.
Juventus who are renowned for their shrewd transfer policy will be dissipating 100 million euros on the 33 year old forward. Although Juventus fans have the right to be excited, are they drifting from the fact that Real Madrid has taken Juventus for a ride? Juventus already have an attack consisting of FIFA World Cup finalist Mario Mandzukic, Paolo Dybala and Gonzalo Higuain. Is Cristiano Ronaldo, who will be turning 34 before the season ends, the player that they need?
Juventus’s average age of their attackers last season was 28 years and after the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo, the average age of Juventus’s attack is 30 years. While Juventus are spending cash on aged strikers, rejuvenated Inter Milan and AC Milan are investing in young players like the recent signing of Inter Milan’s new striker Lautaro Martinez, 20. AC Milan, although under a transfer ban now, bought Andre Silva last summer transfer window, a young, highly potential Portuguese striker.
In the last few years, one thing about Juventus has been constant and that is their defence. Giorgio Cheillini, Andrea Barzagli are the only 2 defence forces left from the famous back line that went on to lift last 7 Serie A titles. With Buffon, Bonucci and Lichteiner, all moving on and Cheillini and Barzagli who are comfortably in their 30’s, Juventus are in definite need of defensive reinforcements. With spending so much on the attack, Old Lady won’t be able to invest in the position they need to invest.
There are already rumors circulating that the young centre back Daniel Rugani who has been very impressive for Juventus in the absence of the big guns will be sold to reincorporate the funds. Are the Juventus forgetting that, Real Madrid had the best defence and midfield, behind Ronaldo because of which he was able to score the goals that he did.
Cristiano Ronaldo since the last few years, has changed his playing style. He has changed his position from being a skilful and pacy winger to being a target man striker. Karim Benzema, although has his critics, played to Ronaldo’s strengths which helped him to play as more of a striker and get into scoring positions.
Higuain is an ex Real Madrid player who used lead Real Madrid’s attack. The Argentinian attacker was sold by Real Madrid, despite of his goal scoring record better than fellow striker Benzema. Gonzalo Higuain was let go of because of the fact that Benzema was better at supporting Cristiano Ronaldo.
It will be interesting to see, how Massimilano Allegri will manage the team with Ronaldo and Higuain in the same attack.
Ronaldo had an excellent end to the season but you can’t deny the fact his season till January was shambolic. At one point of time, Ronaldo had the worst shots to goal ratio in Spanish tier football.
Spending 100 million euros on a 33 year old striker is a huge risk for a club like Juventus. Signing him also means all the players in Juventus are in ‘team Ronaldo’ and we have already started seeing it, Juan Cuadrado has had to give up his number 7 for Ronaldo. Serie A champions have always been known for their determination and team spirit, signing Ronaldo can have a negative impact in the dressing room.
Most of the Real Madrid fans are sad and shocked after the sudden departure of the Ronaldo but still there are some fans that believe this was a perfect time to sell the Portuguese. On the other hand all of the Juventus fans are overwhelmed with their new signing but there is a pinch of apprehension, ‘what if the form of later half of the season was Cristiano Ronaldo’s swan song?’
